No bids at borough auction for Block 85 Lot 2; council to decide next steps

South Plainfield opened a public auction on March 17 for Block 85, Lot 2 with a minimum opening bid of $10,000, but no bids were received.
The mayor announced the terms that a successful bidder must provide a 10% deposit by money order upon completion of the bidding. Borough staff explained the property was appraised, contiguous owners were contacted and there had been interest from several parties before the auction.
"We set the minimum price. And at this point, again, it's up to the council as to whether you wanna proceed with negotiation individually or not sell or whatever you wanna do after this," a borough staff member said. With no bids, the mayor closed the auction and said the borough would contact interested parties and decide next steps.
No formal vote was taken on a sale during the meeting; the council indicated it will determine whether to continue pursuing a sale or retain and maintain the property.
