City speakers said the proposal would create a coordinator plus two deputies (one of whom would be a tenured volunteer known as Larry, replacing a prior volunteer deputy chief) and that having personnel available during major incidents or road closures is important because outside mutual-aid responders can take longer to arrive.
Separately, a speaker asked about a $19,505 line item for fire hose. Staff explained the purchase would supply hoses for Engine 36 after it is refurbished; the department had previously removed hoses from that engine to equip other trucks and needed replacements to restore the engine to service.
No formal vote on the deputy-emergency-coordinator resolution was recorded at the work session. Commissioners indicated support for ensuring adequate staffing and equipment but also sought justification for creating an additional paid deputy.
