Commissioners press for response from DRBA as FAA funding deadline looms

One city speaker said the FAA notified staff that if a new sponsor suitable to the FAA is not approved by May 1, the agency would suspend FAA grant funding for projects tied to the airport.
Commissioners and staff said they have limited time to either reach agreement with the DRBA or secure an FAA-approved new sponsor. Staff said they had asked the DRBA to accept the city’s rescission in order to keep project funding intact and that the FAA’s May 1 timeline creates urgency for the city to have definitive confirmation or an extension.
Commissioners discussed possible next steps, including asking the city’s FAA attorney to seek an extension from the FAA or continuing outreach to the DRBA’s board members before April 15. The commission invited any DRBA response to be relayed to city staff as soon as possible to avoid potential loss of federal funding.
