Council hears parks, paving and downtown updates; 2 Rivers park turf and lighting work scheduled

City parks and public-works staff updated the council on parks improvements and an active paving program.
Parks staff reported the sports lights at 2 Rivers Park are installed and that turf and irrigation retrofits — originally budgeted for soccer and football fields — will be expanded to include two baseball fields because the project is under budget. The fenced sports areas will be closed to the public for construction; walking paths, the tot lot, dog park and restrooms will remain open. Staff said the work is scheduled to be complete in time for the August start of organized sports.
Public-works staff provided a status update on the pavement-preservation program. The contractor will perform dig-outs this week, then milling, chip seal and paving next week; staff said final slurry-seal work will follow to finish the cape-seal process. Streets identified for grinding and paving include Village Square Road and Santa Clara Street, including several cul-de-sacs; sidewalks and curb-and-gutter replacement work reported earlier in the fiscal year is complete.
Staff also noted a rise in vandalism and plant thefts downtown and at Rio Vista Park (rose bushes and new plantings reported stolen) and said they are working with electricians and contractors on anti‑theft measures for park lighting hardware.
The council asked staff to post explanatory signs at closed facilities (staff agreed) and to coordinate slurry-seal schedules to minimize business impacts. No formal council action was required; these were verbal updates.
