He described the Colorado Preservation Inc. request as a first-time request for a traveling, History Colorado–partnered tour that will highlight local museums, historic churches, Neon Alley, Union Avenue and farmers markets; that request was for $1,000. Farrell said Grassroots Gravel — an event that brought 839 riders from 28 states and two countries last year — requested $5,000; the county previously granted $750 that rolled forward after a canceled hill-climb event.
Commissioners signaled support for keeping most sponsorships at or near prior-year levels. Commissioner Zach Swearingen and Commissioner Paula McPheeters both voiced support for $500 sponsorships for the golf tournament and the Colorado Preservation event. Commissioner Miles Lucero and others said they were open to increasing support for Grassroots Gravel but favored a smaller sponsorship than the requested $5,000; several commissioners suggested $500 to $1,000 as an appropriate level, with one commissioner indicating comfort up to $1,000 to serve as an aid-station sponsor.
Commissioners discussed internal options to recruit employees to fill a county golf team and suggested the county’s director of human resources (Director Cresswell) could organize a fair and open employee drawing for participants. The commissioners also encouraged event organizers to seek cost savings in promotion and materials to stretch sponsorship funds.
