Commissioners adopt proclamations for Mental Health Awareness, Wildfire Awareness and Colorado Public Lands Day

The Ouray County Board of County Commissioners unanimously adopted three proclamations May 6 designating May 2025 as Mental Health Awareness Month, Wildfire Awareness Month and recognizing Colorado Public Lands Day (May 17).
Mental health: Carrie Brock of Tri-County Health Network read the county’s proclamation and urged destigmatizing mental-health conversations. Commissioners discussed local barriers to care, including remoteness, appointment availability and stigma; staff suggested distributing “shine a light” decals and workplace challenge cards to encourage conversation and employer support.
Wildfire awareness: Lee Robertson of West Region Wildfire Council presented the Wildfire Awareness Month proclamation and offered Spanish and English outreach materials, koozies and stickers from the Colorado State Forest Service. Robertson noted recent mitigation work and a completed “Track C” fuel-mitigation project that helped a local resident who could not otherwise have afforded the work.
Public Lands Day: Linda Browning of the Ridgway Ouray Community Council read a proclamation recognizing Colorado Public Lands Day on May 17 and described planned events to inform residents about contacting legislators and supporting public-lands protections. Commissioners praised local volunteer organizations for stewardship and said they would provide a digital copy of the proclamation for organizers’ outreach.
Outcome: all three proclamations were adopted unanimously with brief public remarks from presenters and commissioners.
