The El Segundo Unified School District Board of Education on May 13 approved three new job descriptions intended to expand student supports and arts instruction and also moved a maintenance salary range to attract candidates.
The board voted 5-0 to adopt job descriptions for a high school intervention navigator, a middle school elective dance teacher (funded by Proposition 28), and a shared elementary counselor for Richmond Street and Center Street, and it approved a salary adjustment for the director of maintenance and operations from range 21 to range 21–22 on salary schedule Z.
The intervention navigator position was described as a certificated role (teacher or counselor) that will support school-based intervention, coordinate resources, monitor progress with data-driven practices and multi-tiered systems of support, and collaborate with staff to improve student outcomes. The recommendation was presented by Ms. Feal, who said she recommended approval of the new job description for the high school intervention navigator.
The middle school elective dance teacher position will be funded under Proposition 28 and will provide dance instruction, choreograph student performances and support schoolwide arts initiatives. Ms. Veil presented that job description and board members asked one procedural question about whether an audition process would be used for student placement or production purposes; the board did not change the position description before voting.
The elementary counselor position is intended to serve both Richmond Street and Center Street schools and to provide academic, social-emotional and behavioral supports at the elementary level, including group counseling and intervention services; Ms. Feal presented the recommendation and the board approved it 5-0.
On staffing compensation, the district presented a market salary comparison after a resignation in maintenance and operations and recommended moving the director of maintenance and operations from range 21 to range 21–22 on salary schedule Z. The board approved that change 5-0 to remain competitive for candidates.
The approvals were taken as discrete action items with roll-call-style verbal confirmation of unanimous support; no board member recorded a nay or abstention during the recorded votes.
Implementation details such as posting timelines, application windows, audition criteria for the dance elective, and exact effective dates for the salary change were not specified in the meeting record and were left to district administration to implement and report back.
