Park County approves liquor-store license for Old West Liquors in Guffey

The Park County Board of County Commissioners voted 3-0 on Feb. 18 to grant a retail liquor-store license to Old West Liquors LLC, proposed by owner Dana Peters, for a storefront at 1431 Cannon Street in Guffey.
Clerk and recorder staff presented the application, telling the board the office had investigated the submitted materials, including organizational documents, proof of legal possession, photos, and a premises diagram. The clerk reported a measurement of exactly 500 feet from the proposed store entrance to the school driveway and said that measurement is "up to your discretion."
The applicant, Dana Peters, told the board she has operated a bakery in Guffey for nine years and is seeking a packaged-liquor license to serve local residents and highway tourism traffic. "We really want to utilize the tourism traffic that we get on 9 and through 11 Mile to bring more people into Guffey," Peters said. She described security measures for the temporary retail unit—a Connex container with barred windows, locks and cameras—and confirmed she and her staff will complete TIPS training and post required signage.
Several local residents and business owners spoke in favor during public comment, including Mike Brandt, who said Peters has been "very responsible in the operation" of her business and supportive of community events. Other supporters who spoke from online connections included Mead Hopkins and Louise Peterson. Attorney Richard Mandel also voiced support, describing Peters' business history in the town and urging the board to vote yes.
County Attorney Erin Smith advised the board on the hearing process at the outset and the clerk cited Colorado statutory language governing local licensing authority (transcript reference: "CRS 44 dash 3 dash 1 0 3 27"). The board discussed visibility and distance from the school and determined the submitted measurement met the statutory minimum. After public comment, a commissioner moved to adopt the application and a second was given; the board voted "aye" and the motion carried 3-0.
The board did not attach additional conditions to the license during the hearing; the applicant said building facade improvements are expected by May, weather permitting, and that required permits and the certificate of occupancy were in place.
Old West Liquors LLC now holds a county license to sell packaged liquor at 1431 Cannon Street, Guffey; state approvals and licensing steps that follow local approval were not discussed in detail at the hearing.
