The Oshkosh Transportation Committee on May 13 recommended removing several school-related parking restrictions on New York Street that staff said are no longer needed after Merrill School’s demolition and route changes.
Staff described a bus-loading cutout and school-day no-parking zones that had been implemented for Merrill School operations; with shifts of loading and drop-off activity to Kentucky Street, staff said those restrictions are obsolete. The committee voted to remove the bus-loading zone and the no-parking restrictions that applied on school days from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
A staff member said the cutout on the north side and no-parking areas on the south side were created when the street was reconstructed to serve bus loading; now that activity has moved, staff recommended removing the restrictions. “We can remove that bus loading zone,” the staff member said, adding the west side is now wide enough to accommodate traffic and that the restricted time windows were tied specifically to school pick-up and drop-off.
Committee members moved and seconded a single motion to clear all three identified restrictions rather than taking separate votes, and the roll call recorded aye votes from Armstrong, Merritt, Hartman, Lynch and Martin. Staff will forward the recommendation to the Common Council for ordinance changes.
