Committee backs one-sided parking restriction on Fifteenth Street to ease sanitation trucks' route

The Oshkosh Transportation Committee voted May 13 to recommend an ordinance change restricting parking on the south side of Fifteenth Street for 50 feet west of South Main to improve maneuverability for sanitation trucks.
City staff described blocked lanes on Fifteenth Street where vehicles park on both sides, creating difficulty for garbage trucks to make turns and complete collection routes. The committee voted aye (Armstrong, Merritt, Hartman, Lynch and Martin) to forward the restriction to the Common Council for ordinance action.
A staff member told the committee the request came from the sanitation division and showed photographs of cars parked on both sides of the block. “They were just asking if we can just restrict parking to one side so they got enough room to get through here and then to turn on the main street,” the staff member said. The committee clarified the restriction would apply to the south side and would cover the segment up to 50 feet west of the driveway to give trucks room to turn.
Staff noted an employee parking lot is nearby and that employees sometimes park closest to their entrances, reducing available curb space. The committee agreed the restriction was reasonable to prevent route obstructions and minimize repeated collection delays.
The committee’s favorable recommendation will be transmitted to the Common Council for the two-reading ordinance process.
