Board hears presentation on 1 Stop partnership to support teachers; no formal vote

The DeSoto County School Board on May 13 discussed a prospective partnership with an organization identified in the meeting as "1 Stop" to support teachers, including potential housing options, but took no formal vote.

Dr. Bennett, the district superintendent, told the board that representatives from 1 Stop delivered a board workshop and that the district expects to be one of the first small districts in the state to implement a program of this type. He said the program could be "a wonderful piece of leverage to hold on to your teachers." Marcus, a representative identified as coming from 1 Stop, told the board he was "super excited" about the project and its potential to help retain educators.

Board members across several comments described the presentation as timely and praised 1 Stop's representatives for their outreach. Several trustees noted community interest in the concept: board members said residents asked for more information about the housing initiative and that the district would pursue a partnership with the organization.

The board did not approve funding or an agreement for the 1 Stop program during the May 13 session. Discussion of the item and appreciation for the workshop occurred during the superintendent's report and board comments; Dr. Bennett said representatives from 1 Stop and district staff planned further coordination and that the next steps include continued engagement rather than a formal authorization at this meeting.

Board members also said they expected follow-up presentations: Dr. Bennett mentioned that the district would host additional updates and that representatives and staff would return to the board for more information before any contract or funding decision.

The board's remarks indicated support for exploring housing options as a teacher retention tool but made no binding commitments during this meeting.
