The board recognized Michelle LaHara with an Impact Award and heard an update about legislation bearing her husband’s name.
Michelle LaHara told the board that her husband, Deputy Andy LaHara, suffered a catastrophic injury while directing traffic at a graduation ceremony in May 2023 and has made progress since. She said the Florida Legislature had unanimously passed the “Deputy Andy LaHara Act” in both the House and Senate; the act, she said, would ensure that if a law enforcement officer suffers a catastrophic injury in the line of duty, the officer and immediate family members would have health insurance coverage without limiting restrictions. LaHara said the bill now awaits the governor’s signature.
Sheriff Vincent praised LaHara’s advocacy on behalf of law-enforcement families and thanked the board for the award. The board presented pins and the Impact Award; Michelle LaHara asked the community to continue praying for Andy’s recovery and for the bill’s enactment.
No board action was required; the presentation was recognition and a legislative update provided by LaHara.
