The La Canada Unified School District governing board approved submission of the California Department of Education form J‑13A to request average daily attendance (ADA) credit for school days lost to the January Eaton Canyon fire and associated city closures.
Melissa presented the item and said the district closed facilities from Jan. 8 through Jan. 15 after the county state of emergency was declared. She explained that Education Code 46392 allows the Superintendent of Public Instruction to grant normal apportionment credit when schools experience a material attendance decrease because of an emergency; staff said the district is requesting credit for six missed days.
Melissa told the board the request will use two days the district had already exceeded in required instructional minutes and ask for a reprieve on four additional days so that the district will not be penalized on audit for failing to meet the minimum annual instructional minutes. "The J13a request approval for the 6 days that we missed," she said in presenting the materials.
Board action
The board approved the J‑13A submittal. Staff said the J‑13A packet includes the attendance calendar and continuity plan required by CDE and that the form will be forwarded for state review and approval. If approved by CDE, the district will not be cited for reduced instructional minutes resulting from the emergency closures.
