Manassas spotlights student art, literacy and community projects; student narratives published statewide

During the meeting the school board recognized student representatives, art contest winners and student-led community service and literacy projects.
Board members honored outgoing student representative Ashley Bland and current representative Amelia Bridal for their advisory roles. The board presented first-place awards from division-level art and an Arbor Day poster contest across grades K–12 and named the student selections that will represent the division in the Virginia School Boards Association art contest.
Students from Metz Middle School described “Buddy Baskets,” a care-basket project for new mothers that includes diapers, wipes, baby books and self-care items. Students said they partnered with the Virginia Women and Family Support Center to distribute baskets on May 30 and that donations would be accepted via an Amazon wish list through May 23. Teacher Laura Lewis and student presenters said an original goal of 25 baskets had grown to an expected 44 if the remaining items are donated.
The board also spotlighted Voices from the Heart, a personal‑narrative writing project for English learners at Osborne High School. Adriana Cernukhan and Director of Federal Programs Kurt Immel described how student drafts progressed through the teaching-and-learning cycle and family engagement events; staff said six student narratives were published in The Origin Project anthology in the program’s first year and 38 students were published in the most recent cycle. Student Minh Bao Ho read a published poem during the meeting.
The board also read Resolution R2025-04 recognizing three local businesses — Oresman Automotive of Virginia, Virginia Council on Economic Education and Bookworm Central — for the Virginia School Boards Association business honor roll and thanked them for partnership and internship and volunteer opportunities that support CTE and literacy programs.
