Deputy Superintendent Gafeller updated the board on construction of the new Jenny Dean Elementary School, reporting progress on foundation work and underground utilities and saying the project remains on budget and on schedule for a July finish.
Gafeller said exterior foundation walls and structural footers are completed, crews have placed gravel and are preparing to pour the interior concrete slab, and mechanical and electrical conduits are being installed. He urged anyone driving by the site to note the visible masonry walls and new infrastructure.
On procurement, district staff said the owner-direct-purchase program — in which the division buys specified materials directly rather than through the general contractor — has saved about $537,000 so far. The district expects to complete utility connections and pour the slab in the coming weeks, weather permitting.
Board members asked several clarifying questions; Vice Chair Spall asked the deputy superintendent to confirm the timeline and Gafeller reaffirmed the July completion target. The board said it will continue to receive monthly construction updates.
