The Montgomery ISD Student Health Advisory Council presented its annual report to the board on May 13, summarizing the committee's activities this school year and outlining plans for next year.
Darby Lockridge, SHAC chair, told trustees the committee met four times during the school year and provides a parent- and community-focused review of health and wellness curriculum, nursing protocols and district wellness initiatives. The SHAC helped run the district health and wellness fair in February, which drew more than 300 employees and included community vendors and health screenings; 17 of 26 scheduled donors gave blood at that event.
Lockridge said the SHAC completed curriculum reviews this year, including AP Psychology and puberty/sexual-reproduction materials branded as Puberty Talks; the committee recommended changes that nursing staff implemented. The SHAC also worked with nursing to review food-allergy management guidance and supports for the district's resource center.
The council will conduct the state-required triennial assessment of the district wellness plan in the coming year and expects to recruit student representation and additional non-employee parents to meet state meeting composition rules. Lockridge invited community members to contact the committee if they wish to serve.
