Manassas school board asks city to release $10.75 million to buy Centerville Road property

The Manassas City Public Schools board voted 6-0 on May 15 to ask the Manassas City Council to authorize the appropriation of $10,750,000 from the school fund balance to buy the property at 8700 Centerville Road.
The request, filed as resolution R2025-05, would move the division’s leased central office space into district ownership and preserve room for administrative offices and program uses including a planned site for alternative education supports. Vice Chair Spall moved the resolution; it was seconded by a board member and approved unanimously.
Board members said the purchase would save the division on current lease costs and create a permanent home for central-office functions. Board Member Breja said the building would help the district “address current and future facility needs” and named central registration and space to reduce instructional burdens on ESOL teachers as examples. The board noted annual lease costs of roughly $1.2 million and current lease income from tenants of about $355,336 per year.
Superintendent Newman and staff said current tenants’ leases would remain in place if the acquisition is approved by council. The board agreed the property would free up resources now spent on rent and allow the division to use the space for programs tied to student achievement.
The measure is a request to the city council; final appropriation and closing depend on city approval and standard legal and financial procedures. Board members said they will continue to provide updates to council and the public as the process moves forward.
