The Muskego City Finance Committee voted May 13 to recommend creation of a deputy treasurer position by reclassifying a vacant assistant deputy clerk-treasurer role.
Kate, representing the finance department, described the proposal as elevating a position that has been vacant since November 2024. The deputy treasurer would report to the finance director and handle tax collection, receipt processing, reconciliation of payments and biweekly payroll. The recommended pay grade was listed as grade 56 with a salary range discussed during the presentation.
City staff said the change would allow the city to combine duties formerly split among multiple positions and that, because of current vacancies, the move produces an estimated $57,000 in savings for 2025. Staff described the appointment as intended to be permanent and said department size has been reduced over the past five years from about eight positions to five, even with the new classification.
Committee members questioned the expected service life of the position and whether future hires could negate expected savings. Staff said they expect the position to remain for at least several years and that any future hires would likely be lower-paid support roles, not above the new deputy treasurer grade. After discussion the committee approved the resolution to create the deputy treasurer position.
