The Muskego City Finance Committee voted May 13 to use $10,000 in available capital funds to proceed with a second phase of the library parking lot reconstruction, allowing two contiguous phases to be done together this year.
Committee members said completing two sections together will be cheaper than staging the work over multiple years and that the two most-needed sections are the half nearest Janesville Road and the adjacent west portion; a third, east-side phase would be deferred to a later year.
City staff said the project had been included with the road program to save costs and that the committee was approximately $10,000 short of funding the second phase. Staff recommended taking the $10,000 from existing capital appropriations to accomplish the work this year rather than postpone it.
Committee members clarified which area of the lot each phase covers: the part that widens the entrance off Janesville Road to improve vehicle flow, the west side of the lot, and a later east-side phase that would follow in another year. Staff confirmed that the entrance changes discussed during the budget process are included in the current phase design.
After discussion the committee approved a motion to allocate the additional capital and proceed with the two phases this year. The committee also recorded that the entrance area has a bump and narrow width that the work is intended to smooth and narrow issues that cause drivers to speed when entering or exiting.
The city will proceed with work pending contract approvals and the bids already on file.
