County urges faster permitting as Streamline towers could expand broadband and cell coverage

County staff and commissioners discussed progress on Streamline broadband towers and urged permitting staff to accelerate approvals so the towers can be built and eventually host cellular carriers.

Staff reported the Streamline tower in Felda has its foundation complete and work on the lattice structure was beginning. Permit approvals for a Pioneer tower were near completion, and Montura and Port LaBelle sites were in various stages of permitting and engineering review.

One commissioner said the towers are more than broadband infrastructure: ‘‘it’s gonna give him the capability of going out and selling tower space, for cell service,’’ and urged staff to "kick **** and get these permits issued" so construction proceeds while federal and state funding is available.

Staff noted weather, foundation timing and professional-service transitions at Streamline slowed progress, but said recent changes to Streamline’s professional services have accelerated permitting. Commissioners directed staff and building-permitting officials to prioritize review of Streamline permits to reduce schedule risk.

No formal county approvals were taken at the briefing beyond the existing permitting process; staff were asked to report back on permitting status at upcoming workshops.
