Hendry County board approves submission of CDBG housing rehab application for up to 14 homes

Hendry County commissioners approved staff’s request May 13 to submit a 2023–24 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) application for housing rehabilitation assistance covering up to 14 homes.
For the record, Emily Hunter, community relations and legislative director, said the meeting served as the second public hearing required for the CDBG small grant process. She said the board had previously authorized staff in April to pursue the grant and, with help from grant consultants, staff narrowed the proposal to a housing‑rehabilitation application for up to 14 homes.
Hunter asked the commission for three actions required by the CDBG process: receive public input through the hearing, direct staff to submit the grant application, and approve the proposed CDBG housing assistance plan and a related resolution. A motion to approve those items was made and seconded; the board voted in favor by voice vote.
The item proceeded with the public hearing open; no members of the public offered comment during this hearing segment. Staff will now submit the application for CDBG housing rehabilitation funding as authorized by the commission.
Why this matters: CDBG funds, if awarded, provide federal dollars via state allocation to support home repairs for low‑ and moderate‑income households. The board approved staff to pursue the application and the county’s proposed assistance plan for up to 14 homes.
