Ashley, a parks staff member, told the council on May 13 that the pool will open for the season on May 24 and that staff are preparing operations and training.
"Currently, we have 25 concession stand workers and 27 lifeguards," Ashley said, and added that a few lifeguards backed out and the department has scheduled another training for seven more candidates this Sunday. She said those numbers reflect staff who have completed paperwork and do not include everyone being trained.
Ashley reported routine seasonal work completed in April, including opening shelter houses and restrooms, turning on water to the park, and addressing plumbing issues in two restroom locations. She said the concession stand refrigerator and freezer have failed intermittently over the last few years; a technician serviced the freezer recently and provided a repair recommendation and a replacement price.
On operational systems, Ashley said the parks department is between reservation/management computer systems and plans to use Squire as the point-of-sale system for the pool this season. She said staff rented a lift to install remaining splash-pad features and umbrellas and ordered staff shirts and visors.
Ashley reviewed summer programming: a members-only pool party is scheduled for May 23 so membership-holders can practice on the new systems; the pool must be completed by June 7 for a scheduled tournament; the department hosted the first concert of the season and a second book club meeting; and a craft fair in April had 26 vendors paid with 22 showing on the day due to weather.
Ashley relayed a pedestrian-safety suggestion: a park visitor requested painting a pedestrian crossing behind the staff parking lot where a sidewalk currently ends and pedestrians must cross asphalt. Ashley presented the suggestion to the council for comment and noted she was "good with" painting a crossing pending council thoughts.
During the meeting the council approved April claims and appropriations. Chuck Smith made the first motion to approve the April claims and appropriations; Rachel Todd seconded; the council voted in favor on a voice vote.
No further formal budget or staffing actions were made at the May 13 meeting; the report provided operational details and short-term tasks for staff to complete before pool opening.
