Commissioners canvass special ESD election; voters reject proposed ESD

Washington County Commissioners Court on Tuesday formally canvassed the May 3 special election for a proposed Emergency Services District (ESD) after the county elections official presented precinct-by-precinct totals.
Elections Administrator Miss Jackson reported 3,506 registered voters in the proposed ESD area and 994 ballots cast overall: 189 votes in favor of the measure and 805 votes against. Precinct-level figures included 27 ballots in Precinct 101 (9 for, 18 against), 98 ballots in Precinct 109 (24 for, 78 against), 192 ballots in Precinct 115 (32 for, 160 against), 630 ballots in Precinct 203 (114 for, 516 against) and 47 ballots in Precinct 208 (14 for, 33 against).
“Once we don't have any problems with counting or wrong ballots or anything like that,... the workers rose to the occasion,” Jackson said, summarizing the administration of an election she described as administratively complex because of multiple ballot styles and voters both inside and outside the proposed ESD.
A commissioner moved to approve canvassing the special election; the court approved the canvass by voice vote. The results presented to the court are the official canvass record for the special election.
