Tuolumne County supervisors on a morning session in the Board of Supervisors chambers unanimously adopted Resolution 24-25 proclaiming April 2025 as Child Abuse Prevention Awareness Month and presented awards to winners of the county’s annual Prevent Child Abuse Month poster and poetry contest.
Josh Martin, recreation supervisor and chair of the Tuolumne Resiliency Coalition, said the coalition’s theme this year is “It Takes a Village, Strengthening Families and Communities” and urged community members to participate in awareness activities. “Pinwheels are symbols of hope, resilience, and our community's dedication to preventing child abuse and neglect,” Martin said, and he invited residents to wear blue and to attend a child abuse prevention luncheon on April 10 at 11 a.m. at the Chicken Ranch Casino Brahma Ballroom.
The nut graf: the board’s proclamation formalizes a countywide awareness effort that the Tuolumne Resiliency Coalition and the Recreation Department said will include blue pinwheel gardens at Courthouse Park and Adventist Health Sonora and display of winning student artwork in the board chambers. County staff and coalition representatives said the activities aim to promote prevention, strengthen families and highlight community supports for children.
The ceremony opened with supervisors and youth center staff recognizing dozens of students who placed in the contest across multiple age brackets. Winners named by youth center coordinators included Matthew Hockett, Isaac Montrose, Sawyer and Nolan (joint entry), Liliana Jones, Grace Cover, Aubrey Frankenhauser, Ellie Mae Bridal, Addison (last name not specified), Ali Schwitzer, Charlie Schulke, Ryan Schulke, Liam Robertson, Letty Pernay, Lizzie Gavin, Stella Pernay, Marley Dalrempel, Mikayla Cleary, Hannah Alschwied, Oliver Wheeler, Carson Stevens, Dylan Willingham, Zoe Baraton, Madison Scribe, Anastasia Whiting, Kaya Entrekin, Sean McBride, Preston Thomas, Mallory Hanson, Tiana Waltz and Nathan Dennies. The county said the winning posters and poems are displayed on the board-chambers wall for public viewing.
During the meeting Josh Martin described the county’s partnership between the Recreation Department and the Tuolumne Resiliency Coalition and thanked youth center coordinators Donica Schulke and Monica Hirschfield and recreation staff for organizing the contest and the display. “This long standing partnership between the Tuolumne County Recreation Department and the Tuolumne Resiliency Coalition continues to provide young people a creative outlet to express their thoughts and feelings about child abuse,” Martin said.
The board opened the proclamation item for public comment and, seeing none, moved to adopt Resolution 24-25. Supervisor Grieffer moved to approve the proclamation; Supervisor Kirk seconded. Chairman Bridal called the vote and the motion passed unanimously.
The board adjourned the recognition portion of the meeting at 8:52 a.m. and said it would reconvene its regular business later that morning around 9:00–9:05 a.m.
