SONORA, Calif. — The Tuolumne County Board of Supervisors on April 15 approved an amendment extending Chief Probation Officer Dan Hawkes’ employment agreement for three years and setting his compensation as described in the amendment.
Human Resources director Karen McGatigan presented the contract amendment, saying the board appointed Hawkes in May 2020 to a five‑year term that was set to expire at the end of April 2025. The proposed amendment extends his term for three years and sets an hourly rate that McGatigan reported equates to an annual salary figure read into the record.
Hawkes, who attended the meeting, told supervisors he considered serving as chief “the great pleasure and crowning achievement” of his career and said he looked forward to completing work he described as still in progress.
Board members praised Hawkes’ leadership and the department’s progress. Supervisor Campbell noted that Hawkes had taken over at a difficult time for the juvenile facility and probation operations and had helped steady both programs; Supervisor Kirk said the department’s recent performance and evaluations supported the extension.
On a motion by Supervisor Campbell, seconded by Supervisor Kirk, the board approved the contract amendment by unanimous vote.
Clarifying details read into the record by Human Resources included an hourly rate and an annual salary figure; the transcript contains a numeric reading that the county recorded as part of the amendment. The contract and amendment text in county files should be consulted for the exact salary and benefit terms.
