Human Resources director Karen McGatigan presented the contract amendment, saying the board appointed Hawkes in May 2020 to a five‑year term that was set to expire at the end of April 2025. Hawkes, who attended the meeting, told supervisors he considered serving as chief “the great pleasure and crowning achievement” of his career and said he looked forward to completing work he described as still in progress.

Supervisor Campbell noted that Hawkes had taken over at a difficult time for the juvenile facility and probation operations and had helped steady both programs; Supervisor Kirk said the department’s recent performance and evaluations supported the extension.
On a motion by Supervisor Campbell, seconded by Supervisor Kirk, the board approved the contract amendment by unanimous vote.
