Siskiyou County declares emergency after roof collapse at Lake Siskiyou Campground; resolution adopted

The Siskiyou County Board of Supervisors on an interim vote adopted a resolution declaring an emergency at Lake Siskiyou Campground after staff reported that heavy roof damage allowed water intrusion and mold inside the campground’s general store.

County deputy director of general services Jessica Skillen told the board that new concessionaires who took over the campground have been cleaning the property and “there’s work, the public, there’s workers in there.” She said the general store’s roof had “caved down,” water had come through into the office where daily transactions and the safe are kept, and “they did all the cleanup, but it needs to be addressed immediately.”

The resolution was handed out at the meeting and board members moved to adopt it after the staff presentation. Skillen said the concessionaires were getting contractor quotes and that the county had budgeted for some roof damage but not for the full cost discovered after winter; she advised the board that the work would need to be performed before June. The board’s roll call recorded affirmative votes from Director Valenzuela, Director Hough, Director Harris, Director Kobseth and Director Overette; the resolution was adopted.

Board discussion and staff remarks distinguished between immediate safety/repair needs and longer-term campground work. Skillen said staff are also coordinating with the concessionaires on sewer and road work and requested that the clerk distribute copies of the adopted emergency resolution to the board and to the public.

County staff and the concessionaires will obtain quotes and proceed with repairs under the emergency declaration; the board did not specify additional funding beyond remarks that some budgeted funds exist and that further costs would be addressed before June.
