Trustees approve trial summer hours for village hall from Memorial Day to Labor Day

The Village of Cross Plains trustees approved a trial period for summer hours at village hall intended to aid employee recruitment and provide residents an earlier option for some services.
Staff proposed a Memorial Day–to‑Labor Day pilot that would change office hours to 7 a.m.–4 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 7 a.m.–11 a.m. on Fridays, maintaining a 40‑hour workweek through longer weekday shifts. The proposal was pitched as voluntary for departments where coverage and public safety permit, with department heads authorized to set specific arrangements.
Administrator Carly presented observational counts showing low in‑person traffic on Fridays during midday and said the proposal would allow staff to start earlier — which may help residents who need to visit before traditional work hours. Trustees debated flexibility for staff who prefer five‑eight schedules or have childcare constraints and reaffirmed the program should be voluntary and subject to department head approval.
A trustee moved to adopt the summer hours pilot from May 27 through Sept. 1; the motion was seconded and approved by roll call. Trustees said they would review the pilot in September and decide whether to continue year‑round or return to the prior schedule.
