After Sheriff Bouchard’s testimony, committee Chair Brock told members he plans to send a letter to the University of Detroit Mercy asking the school to cancel or explain a continuing affiliation with a Chinese institute.
Brock said he would send the letter as chair and invited feedback from committee members; he noted that Oakland University had rescinded its agreement and Eastern Michigan University had withdrawn from two of three agreements since he previously circulated letters on the issue.
Why it matters: Brock framed the letter as an oversight tool to seek transparency on university relationships with foreign institutions and to encourage other campuses to reassess similar affiliations.
Procedure: The chair said he would send the letter in his capacity as committee chair and asked staff to add that title to the signature line. He did not propose a committee vote on the letter at the hearing.
Ending: Committee members offered minor drafting feedback and the chair said he would incorporate comments before sending the letter.
