Derek Boulware, CEO of Hope for All, told the Mobile City Council on May 13 that Project Homeless Connect — the organization's annual service event — will be held Thursday at The Grounds and will offer municipal‑court assistance, legal aid, state IDs, health and wellness services and transportation to eligible participants.
"This is the eleventh year that we've had it," Boulware said, noting the event was rescheduled because of weather. He gave figures from last year's event to illustrate scale: Alabama state IDs issued, 121; legal‑assistance cases, 148 provided by 22 volunteer lawyers; health and wellness services to 166 individuals; 437 attendees used Wave Transit transportation arranged by the organizers; 653 volunteers supported the event; and 563 people who met the government's definition of homeless received services.
Boulware said the city partners with the event; Wave Transit provides contracted transportation and the Grounds supplies the venue. He thanked Josh Woods and The Grounds for a decade of hosting the event. Council members praised the volunteer and agency turnout; one councilor said the event was the "largest single volunteer opportunity serving the cause of homelessness in Mobile." No formal council action or funding request was made at the meeting.
Project Homeless Connect organizers said the event provides services at no cost to eligible recipients and relies on volunteers and agency partners. Boulware urged residents to support and volunteer for the Thursday event, which he said runs from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
