Pleasant Valley students honored across arts, STEM and athletics; Sherry Tang wins Iowa All-State art

Pleasant Valley Board members recognized students and staff for awards across the arts, academics and athletics during Tuesday’s meeting, with art student Sherry Tang highlighted as the Iowa All-State portfolio first-place winner.
Art teacher Dave Schafer and the board introduced Sherry Tang, a junior at Pleasant Valley High School, and noted the art department’s growth. Schafer said four Pleasant Valley students placed among the top 15 in the Iowa 3A All-State art program; Sherry won first place and the team placed second in the state. Schafer credited the students and teachers for increased participation and success and noted pieces of student work had been published nationally and in state competitions. Sherry addressed the board, saying she submitted an eight-piece portfolio and that her artwork is often self-portraiture inspired by personal experience; she told the board, “I wanna be the most well known artist to ever come out of this region,” and said she plans to major in art in college.
The board also recognized other student achievements the superintendent’s team summarized: the high-school science-bowl team represented the district at nationals; journalism students earned several statewide honors, including an Iowa Spring Journalism Awards finalist and IHSPA scholar titles; theater students and staff received recognition at the Iowa High School Music Theater Awards with multiple student honors and an impact award for a staff member; and the girls’ golf team earned a conference/sectional distinction. At the elementary level, Pleasantview fifth-grader Sage won a state essay contest associated with the Stock Market Game; that student and families were invited to the board to accept a trophy and prize.
Board members thanked teachers, parents and volunteers, highlighted the value of extracurricular learning and encouraged continued participation and support of arts and academic competitions. No board action was required; the recognitions were ceremonial and informational.
Ending: Trustees said the recognitions illustrated district-wide student engagement in arts, STEM and athletics and noted administrators will continue to showcase student accomplishments at future meetings.
