Commission forms subcommittee, favors local artist for ACE and Reliance building murals

Mesquite Public Arts Commissioners moved to pursue two proposed mural projects—one on a Reliance building and one on a building associated with ACE Hardware—favoring continuity by asking artist Miles to develop sketches and cost estimates and forming a small subcommittee to coordinate with building owners.

Commission discussion focused on confirming which walls would be painted, fundraising options and cost estimates. Commissioners noted Reliance’s wall measures about 66 feet by 12 feet; the gallery-facing Reliance wall was identified as having strong visibility. Commissioners said they have a quote and that cost estimates vary depending on wall surface; corrugated surfaces typically raise costs and will require a higher budget than a stucco wall.

The commission discussed funding approaches including asking building owners to contribute, seeking corporate sponsorships, soliciting donated materials (paint, brushes) or applying municipal procurement rules depending on the funder. Brenda Slocum had previously provided an estimate (cited by commissioners) and commissioners said they would seek a cost estimate directly from Miles to refine fundraising requests. One commissioner proposed using Miles as a consistent local artist to provide visual continuity for multiple murals, while also leaving open future opportunities for other artists.

Commissioners agreed to create a small coordination group (George, Cynthia and Mitzi volunteered) to work with Miles, the property owners and staff to develop sketches and refined cost estimates. The subcommittee will return recommendations on funding, scope and timeline; commissioners said they may seek multiple quotes depending on who pays for the work.

No formal vote was required; the item proceeded as discussion and direction to the subcommittee and Miles.
