Mesquite Public Arts Commission unveils five-year plan; council approves mural and public art projects

The Mesquite Public Arts Commission presented a five-year plan and recent projects to the City Council on April 8, 2025. The commission’s plan focuses on creating public art, developing an Arts & Historic District, and raising funds and community participation for future installations.
Karen Muskeremens, a commissioner, summarized the commission’s priorities and recent accomplishments, including three statues funded through a Morph (Mesquite Opportunities Regional Fund) grant and a recently completed mural on the Mesquite Theater. ‘‘We decided we need a plan,’’ Muskeremens said, describing the commission’s shift from piecemeal projects to a structured five-year strategy. She credited Morph and city staff, including Nick Montoya, for technical and grant support.
Planned projects include two statues to be placed by ballfields, a small girl statue for the library, and a first-Friday Mesquite family art walk planned for next October. The commission also revived a proposal for a Pollinator Garden that would combine habitat and art elements.
Council action: Councilwoman Fielding moved to approve the presentation; Councilwoman Gallo seconded. The motion passed and the council accepted the commission’s report. Muskeremens invited public participation and noted a mural dedication at the theater scheduled for April 14 with a community event from 4 to 6 p.m.
Ending: The commission will continue fundraising and community outreach, and staff will coordinate placement and permitting for sculptures and murals.
