The Mesquite Public Arts Commission agreed on months and a two-campus format for a recurring First Friday community arts series, with on-site management delegated to the Mesquite Fine Arts Gallery and the Jimmy Hughes Center.
Commissioners said the festival will run October–December 2025 and January–April 2026 and will include music, food trucks, children’s activities and performing arts. The commission discussed placing music at both the north and south ends of town, with pedestrian traffic routed on North Yucca Street.
The commission emphasized local campus management to reduce administrative overhead. Under the plan, the Fine Arts Gallery and the Jimmy Hughes Center will each manage their vendors, secure permits and insurance, collect applicable sales tax and organize on-site activities; Mesquite Public Arts Commission (MPAC) will act as an umbrella organizer. Esteban (staff) said he will meet with city management and staff member Nick to confirm the permitting and vendor-routing steps.
Commissioners discussed volunteer support for cleanup and pedestrian-control roles, suggesting service organizations such as Rotary interact clubs, youth scouts and sports groups. They also discussed sponsorships and modest vendor fees as revenue sources: one commissioner proposed a small reservation fee to help cover paperwork, while others suggested optional vendor donations or a percentage of vendor sales. Food-truck arrangements will be coordinated by city staff, who are expected to negotiate customary vendor terms.
Commissioners scheduled a First Friday planning meeting for May 21 at 9 a.m. at the STEAM Center to continue logistical planning. The commission did not adopt a formal budget at the meeting and said a budget will be developed as planning progresses.
The commission also discussed advertising responsibilities: owners and campus managers may recruit performers and handle initial performer sign-ups, with festival-wide promotion pooled through MPAC and sponsors. No formal vote was taken on the operational details at the meeting.
