Board approves Title VI Indian Education grant application

The Sioux City Community School District Board of Directors voted to approve submission of the district's Title VI Indian Education grant application for the 2025–26 school year.

Dr. Dora Young presented the grant during a public hearing required by the application process and described the program's purpose, allowable services and recent award history.

Title VI funding supports culturally related academic needs for American Indian and Alaska Native students, Young said, providing services such as tutoring, mentoring, student liaisons and family support. Young told the board the district’s 2024–25 award was about $104,067 (rounded by the grantor to roughly $105,000) and projected the 2025–26 allocation at $89,369; she said allocation changes reflect available federal funds and student counts.

Young explained student eligibility uses an Indian Student Eligibility Certification form (the “506 form” in district practice) completed by parents or guardians when students enroll. She said the district maintains those forms in its records for federal reporting and that the district’s Parent Advisory Committee reviewed the application before the hearing.

After no public comment, a board member moved and the board unanimously approved the motion to submit the Title VI application.

The board’s approval authorizes district staff to complete and submit the application; Young said the district will notify the board if federal rules or the award change.

Board action on the item was limited to setting the record for submission; no new district policy or program changes were adopted at the hearing.
