The Northern Regional Advisory Council unanimously recommended approval of four CWMU requests to include public lands or gain trade lands after Division of Wildlife Resources staff and district biologists reviewed habitat and public benefit.
Chad Wilson explained that two requests were renewals and two were new inclusions of public lands; the division recommended approval. District biologist Daniel Lee described Ingham Peak’s single public section as high‑quality deer and moose habitat but said the CWMU offers trade lands totaling 7.5 sections in compensation and that the manager agreed to several compromises to retain public hunting access in the best mule‑deer sections.
Panel members discussed how trade lands are posted and how biologists evaluate equity between public parcels taken into a CWMU and private lands opened to the public; staff said trade lines will be posted on the ground and on the division’s map and that biologists provide the habitat evaluation and recommendation.
Public comment included a range of opinions: five online responses were mixed (weighted average 2.4) and some commenters objected to public land being included in CWMUs; others supported specific CWMs. The RAC moved to accept the division’s recommendation and the motion passed unanimously. The recommendation will go to the wildlife board.
