Volunteers refreshed Gig Harbor parks; organizers report slightly lower turnout at Parks Appreciation Day

Commissioners debriefed Parks Appreciation Day during their May 7 meeting and praised volunteer efforts while noting participation appeared somewhat lower than in prior years.
Parks Manager Jennifer Pero described the work done by volunteers and handed thanks to groups including the Interact club, which removed invasive grass and cleared paths. "They did so much. I did not think they were gonna get as much clear clear path grama out of there as they did," she said.
Organizers said about 60 people were registered for the event and volunteers concentrated on trails, native-plant areas and cleanup; one speaker said the total volunteer number for the recent event was about 65. Parks staff and commissioners thanked city crews, high-school volunteers, Rotary and crews from neighboring groups for their work.
Commissioners noted anecdotal reports that promotion may have been lighter than in previous years and said staff will consider outreach adjustments for next year. The debrief covered related seasonal events as well: the paddlerss event drew a record 52 entries, a separate park ribbon and the ongoing construction of new recreation facilities were noted as signs of growing recreation capacity in the city.
