La Plata council adopts rules of procedure and confirms board appointments at organizational meeting

After discussion about compliance with the Maryland Open Meetings Act and the appropriate process for amending rules, the council voted by roll call to adopt the resolution. The motion passed; Councilman Johnson and others cast aye votes and Councilman Sampson voted no on one procedural matter earlier in the meeting but the resolution itself carried by the majority recorded.
The council then confirmed appointments to several boards and commissions. Motions and roll-call approvals included:
- Councilman Eric Sampson to the Design Review Board (approved by roll call). - Councilman McCormick to the Beautification Committee / Keep La Plata Beautiful (approved by roll call). - Councilman Guttenberg to the Planning Commission and to the Historic Preservation Commission (approved by roll call). - Councilman Johnson to the Parks and Recreation Commission (approved by roll call).
The mayor also appointed Councilman Johnson as mayor pro tem; the council confirmed the appointment by roll call.
The council’s actions put the town’s organizational structure and committee representation in place for the new term. The mayor and staff noted that any council-driven amendments to the rules would follow a public work-session process and subsequent vote; staff advised members that proposed changes should be reviewed in open session to comply with the Open Meetings Act.
