Planning commission approves painting of storefront ceiling; broader alterations removed from application

At its May 14 meeting the Troy Planning Commission approved an amended certificate of appropriateness request limited to repainting the ceiling above a main storefront entrance, after the applicant removed broader exterior alterations from the application.

Planning staff reported that the applicant narrowed the request: rather than painting multiple storefront elements, the applicant asked only to paint the ceiling in front of the main storefront entrance from a cream color to Extra White. "Their request is actually just painting this little ceiling, in front of the, main storefront entrance... so based on that, staff does recommend approval of the paint due to compliance with the design manual section 2.6," staff said.

Staff clarified that other items previously shown on application drawings—trim over arches and elements under windows—were no longer part of this application because the applicant plans to replace those elements. Commissioners confirmed they were approving only the ceiling paint; the motion specified flat white paint for the ceiling above the entrance. The commission seconded the motion and approved it by roll call. The roll call included recorded votes of "Mr. Westmeyer? Yes," "Mr. Emmerich? Yes," "Mr. McGarry? Yes," "Mr. Wilkie? Yes," and "Mr. Zirlik? Yes." The motion was approved.

The commission recorded that the steel plates and other storefront replacements were a separate matter not before the commission in this vote. After this item the commission asked if there was any other business and then moved to adjournment.
