The Crookston City Council on March 17 approved a resolution to apply for the Greater Minnesota Cities Tier 2 Housing Aid Grant Program.
City staff described the program as a straightforward housing aid grant and said to their knowledge there is no cost to the city to submit the application. Staff noted the program can reimburse developers for eligible affordable housing development costs; meeting remarks said the grant can provide “up to almost $400,000 for reimbursement of affordable housing development,” and that homeownership projects can serve buyers up to 115 percent of the state median income. Staff also noted that grant funds must be expended by 2029.
Council members asked whether absent staff members who normally handle housing questions were available; staff said one contact was unavailable that evening but that the program brochure and the application materials were included in the packet.
The council approved the resolution by roll call (ayes recorded for Menard, Jourty, Fisher, Briggs, Cavalier and Brecken). Staff indicated no local match or additional city cost was expected to apply for the grant. No further conditions were added to the application authorization during the meeting.
