Council approves $11,750 Zamboni battery purchase from reserve fund

City staff told the council the purchase is an unplanned, advanced replacement after one of the Zamboni’s batteries began “losing charge rapidly and not holding through a game.” A staff speaker said the machine uses a bank of batteries rather than a single cell and that funds are available in the reserve account.
Council members asked about the equipment’s expected life and past replacement history. Staff said the current batteries dated to around 2017 and estimated a roughly eight-year life expectancy. The council discussed that the reserve account receives annual funding at budget time to cover such equipment replacements.
After brief discussion the council voted to approve the resolution. A roll call during the meeting recorded the following ayes: Flock, Menard, Jertie (listed in transcript as “Jertie/Jourde/Jourty”), Fisher, Briggs, Cavalier and Brecken. The motion carried.
The resolution directs staff to use restricted reserve funds to purchase the battery bank; staff indicated the purchase would come from the reserve account line identified in the meeting packet. No additional appropriation or budget amendment was discussed on the council floor.
Council members did not request a follow-up report before the purchase was made. Staff indicated they would proceed with the procurement under the approved resolution.
