Palos Park reports rise in building permits, moves ahead with code update

The mayor said Palos Park saw a nearly 90% increase in building permits compared with 2023, reporting 496 permits in 2024, and noted three new businesses and two new homes were built last year. The community development department was described as having three full-time and one part-time employee handling permits, code enforcement, licensing and planning and zoning.
The mayor said village consultants identified as Cameron provided a draft development code update that the plan commission and public meetings reviewed in March and April 2025. The address said further review and revisions will occur and a full public hearing will be held before the plan commission, which will then make recommendations to the village council prior to any adoption.
The address also said the village is updating its adoption of the International Building Code to keep building standards current. The mayor noted construction work at a center on Southwest Highway that is finalizing a new three-unit residential building, and that the Moose parking lot work is nearly completed except for landscaping. No formal zoning vote or code adoption occurred during the address.
