Auditor’s voicemail flags justice court EIN and bank account; deputy clerk asks commissioners to involve county attorney

Deputy Clerk and Recorder Dana told the Carter County Board of County Commissioners on April 30 that the county had received a voicemail from county auditor Bob Denning advising the justice court should not create its own employer identification number and that the court should cancel that EIN and use the county trust account through the Treasurer’s Office.
Dana played the voicemail in the meeting. In the recorded message Denning said he received an email about the justice court creating its own EIN, called that “really inappropriate,” and advised canceling the court’s EIN and opening (or using) a trust account through the treasurer. The voicemail gave a phone number and asked staff to call with questions.
Commissioners discussed follow-up: the clerk said she had asked county attorney Corbett to get involved and that Judy (auditor) had been told to email all parties; staff suggested a conference call among Denning, Corbett, the justice-court clerk (Kathy) and county staff to resolve whether an order, state directive or other authority permits the separate EIN. No vote was taken; commissioners directed staff to coordinate and bring back documentation (for example a Supreme Court order or other formal authority) if one exists.
