Broadwater County trust board approves grants for Lions Club cooker and McCarthy Park courts

Broadwater County commissioners approved two trust-board grant requests on April 23, funding a fire-suppression upgrade for the Broadwater County Lions Club and court repairs at McCarthy Park.
The Broadwater County Trust Board requested $11,550 for the Lions Club to help purchase an auto-fry cooker that includes an Ansul automatic fire-suppression system. Kim Kondalick of the Broadwater County Trust Board said the full unit costs $16,500 and the club will provide a 30% match of $4,950; the trust-board request covered the remaining $11,550. “So that system costs $16,500. They’re going to do a 30% match of 4,950, so their request is for that amount,” Kondalick said. A motion to approve the grant was made and seconded and passed by voice vote.
The commission also approved a $30,000 STOKE grant for repairs at McCarthy Park, which the presenters said would remove and replace tennis, pickleball and basketball surfaces. Liz Wishman, who identified herself as part of a local leadership group, said the project’s total cost was estimated at $45,000 and would rely heavily on volunteer labor and in-kind contributions to reduce expenses. “We found every avenue to try to cut it back to that 45,000. And most of it is volunteer work and we’re excited about it,” Wishman said. Commissioners discussed sponsor matching funds and in-kind work before moving, seconding and approving the grant by voice vote.
Both items were taken during the regular agenda and drew no public comment during the motions.
The approvals let the Lions Club pursue installation of the suppression-equipped cooker in time for upcoming community events and fund the McCarthy Park repairs that presenters said had not been addressed in 18 years.
Clerk records show the trust-board funds will be drawn from the county’s trust board accounts; commission members did not record a roll-call vote in the meeting transcript and each grant was adopted by unanimous voice vote.
