Planning commission approves rebranding signs for Illinois Bone and Joint at 550 W. Ogden

The decision matters because the changes will alter the appearance of two ground signs, one wall sign and one permanent window sign along a major village corridor, and commissioners discussed visibility and uniformity as the village considers future site redevelopment plans.
Lino Carrillo, who said he represents Illinois Bone and Joint and works for Express Signs and Lighting of Shorewood, Illinois, told the commission the work is “a result of them . . . merging with Hinsdale Orthopedics” and that the proposal involves “face changes to the two ground signs” by adding aluminum panels but no changes in sign size. Carrillo also said the application packet included the existing window signage for reference and that one wall sign on another site had already been changed.
Commissioners raised questions about the color choices and nighttime visibility. One commissioner said the green face could be hard to see in the evening because the signs will not be illuminated; others said they preferred the two ground signs use the same color scheme for consistency. Commissioners also noted the site is planned for a larger redevelopment — Carrillo said the property is expected to be redeveloped later as a larger surgical center, with soil borings already under way, so the current signs may be interim.
Chairman Cashman moved to approve case A-20-2025 with a recommendation that the applicant use the white face with green lettering (rather than green face with white lettering) on the ground signs for uniformity; the motion was seconded and passed on a roll call vote with all commissioners voting aye.
The commission’s approval allows the applicant to proceed with the face changes described in their submittal; the record notes the applicant will remove Hinsdale Orthopedics branding and install Illinois Bone and Joint faces, keep existing landscaping, and that no change in sign dimensions was approved.
