Broadwater County will cover $74 monthly insurance increase for employees through June

Broadwater County Commissioners voted to have the county absorb a $74-per-employee monthly increase in the county’s group health insurance for the remainder of fiscal year 2025.
Debbie Kelly, Broadwater County finance officer and payroll manager, told commissioners the increase applies to 68 employees and would add about $5,032 per month to county costs; covering April, May and June would total “just a little over” $15,000, she said.
Kelly said the county has traditionally covered similar increases and reminded the commission that any decision for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2025 does not bind decision-making for fiscal 2026. She also said revenues and vacant-position savings will factor into next year’s budget discussions.
A commissioner moved that the county pick up the $74 monthly increase for the remainder of fiscal year 2025; a second was recorded, the chair called for public comment and, hearing none, commissioners voted by voice. The motion passed.
Commissioners and staff said future handling of the insurance increase will be discussed during the FY26 budget process and when third-quarter revenue reports are completed.
The county will fund the April–June cost from the general fund, per staff clarifications during the meeting. No formal roll-call vote tally was recorded on the transcript; the commission approved the measure by voice vote.
