Morton Grove honors Mayor Daniel P. DeMaria at final board meeting

The recognition drew tributes from trustees, state officials and community groups. A motion to authorize a street sign in the mayor’s honor passed 6‑0; Trustee Phil amended the wording during the vote to replace “temporary” with “permanent,” saying, “I’d like to take that word temporary out and put permanent in. I vote aye.”
The honors highlighted why the event mattered to residents and local institutions. DeMaria was credited in statements read into the record with leading economic development projects, partnering on a regional water supply transition and supporting local schools and community events. A proclamation from Gov. J.B. Pritzker and a letter from U.S. Sen. Tammy Duckworth were entered into the record; representatives of state legislators also provided a joint proclamation from the Illinois General Assembly.
Board members and invited guests described the mayor’s role in specific local initiatives. Trustees and speakers noted his involvement in attracting restaurants and other businesses to Morton Grove, supporting the Morton Grove‑Niles water commission and advancing infrastructure projects. Trustee Mink framed the parade and anniversary traditions as part of the village’s community identity, saying, “It’s our tradition.”
The meeting included a ceremonial renaming of the Morton Grove Days band shelter as the “Mayor Danny D Soundstage,” presentation of keepsakes and gifts, and wide public comment praising DeMaria’s accessibility and engagement with community groups. Community speakers included representatives from the Morton Grove Chamber of Commerce, Niles Township District for Special Education, and faith and civic organizations; the police department presented a flag that flew over the Morton Grove Police Department on May 13, 2025.
DeMaria, who opened and closed his remarks visibly moved, said near the end of the meeting, “I’m not saying anything because this has just been an incredible run.” The board adjourned at 8:20 p.m.; DeMaria said he will remain active in village events and community fundraising even after leaving office.
The formal action taken at the meeting was Resolution 25‑44 (installation of a street sign to honor Mayor Daniel P. DeMaria), which passed unanimously. Other proclamations and letters were entered into the record as ceremonial recognitions and do not create legal obligations for the village.
