Council authorizes staff to explore leasing former Dodge dealership for Public Works

Council members authorized city staff to further explore a potential lease of the former Dodge dealership building on U.S. 90 as a new Public Works facility and to return with alternatives by the next meeting.
A council presenter described the site as “a prime piece of property on a highly visible stretch of 90” and said leasing the former dealership could allow Public Works to move into an enclosed, fenced area and free the current Public Works building for sale to put it back on the tax roll. “It would keep it on the tax roll and be about $5,000 a month,” a council member said when asked about the expected lease cost.
Other council members urged staff to consider alternative locations, including property in the industrial park on Goldkist Boulevard and county options, and asked staff to return with multiple site options. Lisa, city staff, told the council she would look for other options and return with alternatives by the 27th.
Council discussion clarified that the motion authorized only further exploration and was not a commitment to enter into a lease. The motion passed on a roll-call vote to permit staff to proceed with the evaluation and to report back with additional options.
