Commission approves continuation of DOC RED grant funding for juvenile diversion work

The Codington County Commission voted May 13 to approve applying for a second year of Department of Corrections RED (Racial and Ethnic Disparities) grant funding in the amount of $19,768 to support diversion programming.
County staff said last year's award supported creative interventions targeting racial and ethnic disparities in diversion, especially among Native American youth. The program partners include the Boys & Girls Club and collaboration with the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate, cultural advisors and activities such as a Native American club, talking circles and planned events.
Commissioner McElhaney moved to approve the application and Commissioner Johnson seconded. Commissioner Liz (diversion program lead) thanked the county for continued support and praised the partnership and results over the past six to seven years, saying the county's diversion efforts have been a state leader.
County staff characterized the program as focusing on culturally appropriate activities and engagement for youth who are overrepresented in diversion caseloads. The motion carried and staff will complete application signature steps.
