Wellington trustees approve resolution to apply for T-Mobile Hometown grant for Veterans Garden

Wellington trustees on May 13 unanimously approved a resolution authorizing staff to apply for a T‑Mobile Hometown Grant for a Veterans Garden at Wellington Community Park.
Deputy Town Administrator Kelly Hoehling presented the project location (just north of the dog park on the east side of the trail) and a preliminary design that includes an American flag, one flag for each military branch, six benches and a walkway. “So right now, the cost estimate is between $50,000 and $65,000,” Hoehling said.
Hoehling told the board the PROS advisory board has championed the project, that a donation page has been live on the town website since last year and that organizers ran a silent auction during the July 4 event the prior year. She said staff would issue a press release if the trustees authorized the grant submission.
Trustees discussed design details and fundraising approaches. Trustee Teets asked whether a memorial wall would be included and staff said creating a raised wall may be infeasible because sloping requirements could extend into the mapped floodplain; staff said they were discussing alternate designs and the PROS board would review options.
Trustee Cannon, a retired Air Force veteran, and others discussed donor bricks and memorial benches; staff said brick walkways can heave in riparian areas and suggested donor benches or plaques as durable alternatives.
The board passed Resolution No. 20‑2025 authorizing the town to submit the T‑Mobile grant application and directing staff to proceed with the application. Trustees voted in favor; no public opposition or comments were offered at the meeting.
