Board to discontinue half-day kindergarten option as registrations dwindle

District staff told trustees that the half-day kindergarten option will not be offered next year because registration numbers have declined and the FTE is not viable.
The presenter said last spring only nine students had registered for half-day kindergarten; the district ultimately ran one half-day section this year with 22 students but current registration this spring is below nine. “Those numbers just continue to dwindle. And so that FTE just no longer seems viable to put that FTE,” a staff presenter said.
The presenter said the district intends to move to full-day kindergarten across the district. Staff will contact families who earlier requested half-day placement to inform them of the change; the district said it will continue to accept registrations but has no fixed cutoff date for sign-ups.
Board members asked practical questions about space and FTE. Staff noted that if registrations rose enough in a future cycle to justify two half-day sections it could again be considered, but the current forecast and registration pattern do not support keeping the part-time option.
